Linebacker, Class of 2019
Butler Community College, Blythewood, SC
6-6, 220

Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from Butler Community College (KS) linebacker Amare Barno on Monday.  Barno is the 19th commitment of the 2019 recruiting class, and the second JUCO player in the class.

Barno, listed at 6-6, 220, visited Virginia Tech without an offer over the weekend.  He received an offer on his visit, and it didn’t take him long to choose the Hokies over Nebraska.  He had 66 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks for Butler this season.

Barno is originally from Blythewood, SC, which is just north of Columbia.  He projects as either a Backer or a defensive end for the Hokies.  He’s expected to sign his Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

We’ll have a full preview of what to expect on Signing Day coming up tomorrow.

  1. Am I the only person that saw his picture and first thought was, “did VT just sign an amputee?” Something about the way his hand is held forward makes it seem like he’s missing his left arm. First time seeing the picture was scrolling through Facebook so I only got a glimpse

    1. Don’t think so. Not sure I am playing Dax over Ashby. This Barno kid is not physical enough to play over Dax or Ashby. He is split out wide in coverage sometimes, maybe a WHIP, maybe size says DE.

  2. I’ve been to the three bowl sites you mention and a number of others. Annapolis is the #2 overall bowl experience on my list behind only New Orleans. Orlando is warm (sometimes) and that’s about it. The Belk Bowl is downtown so there are some activities and you can stay nearby. But the stadium is too big for that game and, like most bowl games, has no atmosphere. Annapolis is near major cities, is geared toward tourists and has a sufficient number of centrally lovated bars/restaurants and sightseeing opportunities – with nearby hotels within close proximatity of the stadium – and the stadium itself is the perfect size for a bowl game. The only downside I experience was the cluster getting into the stadium.

  3. I predict he will be a DE after putting on about 40 lbs of muscle under Hilgart. The Hokies have plenty of very good linebackers but definitely need more D linemen. Maybe he was not highly recruited (only a few P5 schools), since he is a tweener and it may take time for him to develop.

  4. Tremaine Edwards 2.0? Is there such a position as hybrid DE? At VT I guess we call it a Whip Lb. very athletic looking young man.

    1. Whip is more a safety/LB hybrid. He is split out plenty in coverage, I can see whip I can see DE…I don’t see him playing over Dax or Ashby, even if Dax is out of position at backer. Barno’s highlights show tackling from the side everytime. Never puts his facemask through anyone’s chest…he looks tentative and ACC players will smoke you if you try that O-Lay tackling. My guess is 20 lbs of weight and DE

  5. 6′ 6″ frame. Put 25 pounds on him and he could be a heck of a DE in our system if he only loses a small step.

Or I guess Backer, but then we’re replacing an already pretty good position. I guess I’d prefer to see him grow some and be a DE.
