In 2012, 2014, and 2015, Virginia Tech was 5-6 after eleven games and needed a 12th game win over Virginia to be bowl eligible. In every case, the Hokies got that win and kept the bowl streak alive.

The 2014 situation was particularly grim, as Virginia took a 20-17 lead with 2:55 left to go, and Virginia Tech faced 75 yards of turf between them and the end of what was, at the time, a ten-game Commonwealth Cup winning streak. Michael Brewer and Bucky Hodges took care of business, first hooking up on a 50-yard pass, and then connecting for the 9-yard game winner.
