The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was picked fifth by the media in the 2018 ACC Operation Basketball Preseason Poll.  The Hokies are the highest-ranked team that did not receive a first place vote.

Here are the overall projections, with first place votes in parenthesis, and total number of points.

1: Duke (52) – 1709
2: Virginia (47) – 1699
3: North Carolina (20) – 1641
4: Syracuse (1) – 1268
5: Virginia Tech – 1187
6: Clemson (1) -1148
7: Florida State – 1127
8: NC State – 885
9: Notre Dame – 859
10: Miami – 816
11: Louisville – 735
12: Boston College – 568
13: Georgia Tech – 324
14: Wake Forest – 313
15: Pitt – 241

Quite a bit is expected of the Hokies this year, who are gunning for their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.  The program has never made three consecutive NCAA Tournaments before.  Tech is also ranked No. 15 in the AP Poll, and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll.

Quite a bit is also expected of senior point guard Justin Robinson, who was picked Preseason Second Team All-ACC by the media.  He is the first Virginia Tech player to make a Preseason All-ACC team since Malcolm Delaney did it back in 2010, according to HokieSports.com.  Robinson received two votes for the ACC Player of the Year, and he is one of 20 players on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List.

Virginia Tech’s 2018-19 season begins on Friday, November 9 when they host Gardner-Webb in Cassell Coliseum.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm, and the game can be seen online on the ACC Network Extra.

  1. Kind of impressive really considering. ‘course you’ve gotta play the game. Love Justin, but think he’s stretched as far as he can go, need a few others to get to that level and help him out.

    1. Geez. I was at UNCW on Saturday where I watched that Clemson team have to pull out all the stops to beat the Seahawks in a game where UNCW led most of the time.
