Virginia Tech received a surprise commitment when 4-star athlete JR Walker picked the Hokies over offers from NC State and many other Power 5 programs.

At 6-1, 205, Walker is expected to play safety for the Hokies.

Walker is from Clayton, NC, which is just outside of Raleigh.  He becomes the second North Carolina player of the 2019 class to pick the Hokies, joining Charlotte receiver Elijah Bowick.  Walker was considered by most to be a heavy lean to hometown favorite NC State.

Boasting an offer list that includes the Wolfpack, UNC, South Carolina, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, Michigan State, Tennessee, Virginia and Wake Forest, Walker becomes the 17th member of the 2019 recruiting class.

Here are his rankings by the various recruiting services…

247: 4-star, No. 174 overall, No. 9 athlete, No. 6 player in NC
Rivals: 3-star, No. 33 athlete, No. 18 player in NC
ESPN: 4-star, No. 28 safety, No. 12 player in NC

Walker visited Blacksburg for last weekend’s game against Notre Dame.  The Hokies weren’t regarded as major players for his services, until his commitment today.

  1. His style of play, particularly on defense, reminds me a bit of Cody Grimm. He’s not going to knock someone’s head off but he’s consistently in the correct position to make a finesse play (forced fumble/tackle for loss/pass deflection/etc). At 6’1” 205, once he gets into our strength and conditioning program he could easily bulk up to 215 – 225 and play Whip.

  2. Great news! Hokie Nation welcomes you home! You just made one of the best decisions of your life!!

  3. Fantastic! This is the start of Junior Walker and the All-Stars!

    I know it’s not Junior, it’s J.R., and I’m dating myself, too, but humor me – I couldn’t resist.

    1. My first thoughts, exactly! I was going to ask if he was bringing the All Stars with him or if he had to give up the band while on scholarship.

    2. What does it take!!! One of my favorite songs of all time and don’t give s flip if it dates me. I thought the same thing when I saw his name. Go Hokies

      1. AND “Gotta Hold on to the Feeling”!!, also in best two by Jr. Walker and the All Stars!!

    3. Shotgun, shoot him before he runs now. Every time I see his name I also think of Juinor Walker and the All stars too. It’s not just you.
