Rumors about redshirt sophomore center Khadim Sy had been quietly whispered throughout the message boards for several weeks, and they were confirmed on Monday.  Sy has left Virginia Tech and will attend a junior college this season.  A Tech spokesman confirmed the news to Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch this morning.

If that story sounds familiar, it should.  Sy left Blacksburg before last season began and enrolled at Tallahassee Community College, but left there in October before re-enrolling at Virginia Tech for the spring semester of 2018.  He redshirted this past season and would have had three years of eligibility remaining for the Hokies.

Sy was expected to back up starting center Kerry Blackshear this season.  Sy averaged 4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Hokies two years ago.

Sources have told TechSideline.com that Sy’s departure is not basketball related.

  1. Nothing personal but if you leave once the thread is broken. Sure, there *might* be extenuating circumstances but as a rule you’re going to do better most times to move on. My only guess is there was a slot open so it cost nothing to let him back but as we’ve seen this time we’ve gained nothing.

  2. No surprise, just irritating. I remember last year when they announced Sy returning to the program and asking out loud why in the world would Buzz would let him back? Cuz he’s a nice guy?! I know we are desperate for height but Sy was never going to give us any valuable minutes and was not cut out for ACC play. They let him back last October, which basically means the coaches felt they couldn’t go out and find a better big back up big man between October and this summer, which is pathetic. Is it just me or is our recruiting really as bad as it seems? It was already bad before we lost two assistants this summer. And zero 2019 signees. Not looking good for the short term future.

  3. So he’s STILL a freshman? “3rd year frosh”

    1. I find it hard to believe that that we can’t get 5-7 minutes of effort out of Fullard.

    2. I agree completely. Wouldn’t you think tat CBW and staff had to know about this situation!

  4. We are really deep down low now. Just knowing the curse that is on VT hoops I fully expect an injury to a big man to occur so we have a center who is 6′ 5″
