Virginia Tech is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, and they’ll be going to Pittsburgh as an 8-seed. The Hokies will take on 9-seed Alabama on Thursday, March 15.  9:20 is the approximate tipoff time, and the game will be televised by TNT.  The games in Virginia Tech’s bracket will be played in PPG Paints Arena.

The Virginia Tech-Alabama winner will play the winner of 1-seed Villanova vs. the winner of a play-in game that pits Radford against LIU-Brooklyn.

The back-to-back NCAA Tournament invitations for Virginia Tech are the first time the Hokies have accomplished that feat since 1985 and 1986.

Alabama is 19-15 overall and 8-10 in the SEC, finishing ninth in the 14-team conference. The Crimson Tide lost in the SEC semifinals to eventual SEC Tournament champion Kentucky, 86-63.

Alabama is led by freshman Collin Sexton, a 6-3 point guard who averages 19.0 points per game and shoots 44.4 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from three-point range. Sexton is a projected NBA lottery pick who is also Alabama’s top passer, with 110 assists for the season. Alabama’s top rebounder is 6-9, 232-pound forward Donta Hall, at 6.8 rebounds per game to go with 10.9 ppg (second on the team).

We’ll have a more thorough preview of the game against the Crimson Tide on Monday.

  1. HTF does Alabama make it into the tourney with less than 20 wins and a losing record in the SEC?

  2. Donta Hall did not play against Kentucky. If he’s back, that’ll make life a lot more difficult.

  3. Time to put a whoopin’ on the Crimson Tide!
    * No better way than to get rid of a bad taste in your mouth than to put a whoopin’ on Bama!!!
