Virginia Tech finally received some good news on National Signing Day around 11 a.m., as long-time target Dax Hollifield announced his decision to commit and sign with the Hokies.

Hollifield is a big win for Virginia Tech on the recruiting trail. The consensus four-star prospect from Shelby, N.C. holds 20 scholarship offers, almost exclusively from Power 5 programs. Virginia Tech beat out a laundry list of notable programs for Hollifield’s signature, including Clemson, North Carolina, Stanford and South Carolina.

The 6-foot-2, 236-pound prospect gives Virginia Tech commitments from three linebackers in the Class of 2018, both of whom are highly touted. Hollifield joins Keshon Artis and Alan Tisdale in the Hokies’ class, giving Virginia Tech commitments from three of their top defensive targets overall. Virginia Tech now has 23 members in their Class of 2018 overall.

Hollifield’s commitment gives the Hokies their first commitment on National Signing Day. The overwhelming majority of Virginia Tech’s class has been locked up since the early signing period in December, but the Hokies have been recruiting a small amount of players since then. 1. Great news..Welcome to Hokie Nation Dax Hollifield! We are thrilled to have you a part of Hokie Nation!

  2. Welcome to Hokie Nation Dax – great choice! I see many possible NFL’ers in Bud’s future linebacking core! Hollifield, Artis, Tisdale, Rivers, Ashby, Kearney, Griffen just to name a few!

    Go Hokies!

  3. Welcome HOME, Dax. The Hokie Nation will be yelling our Lund’s our to support you in our defense. ❤️🦃🏈

  4. Excellent news! This kid reminds me of the great Ben Taylor, and you didn’t want to get hit by Ben Taylor!

  5. YES!!! I was bummed on Tremaine leaving early so we have no returning starters at LB. However, having the trio of Tisdale, Artis and Hollifield coming in makes me happy in the coming 3 years; maybe not next year but ’19 to ’21 the LB should be deep and experienced.

So welcome to the HOKIE Nation; glad to have all 3 of you on board. Could be good competition to have the 3 of you pushing each other making all of you better and making Tech the #1 D in the nation.

  6. Wow… with this much talent in LB corps… does Bud get away from nickleback and restore the Whip as the std set?

    1. Good question. I suspect we will run a 4-2-5 mostly from here out, as the college football landscape has changed, most teams do not have a fullback, they have an extra receiver now. So many don’t even have a traditional tight end, but use an H-back. Overall, though, most teams use one more outside receiver, and one less between the tackles, so I suspect we’re going to stay at 2 LBs, barring we play a team that runs a more traditional 2 back set.

  7. Uh-huh.. A good linebacking corps solves a lot of other sins (which I hope we don’t have but…) This is awesome.

  8. This is a huge win for Tech and he is going to be a great VT player. Welcome to the Hokie Nation Dax! Thanks for becoming a Hokie – can’t wait to follow you on the field and help the Hokies back to greatness.

  9. See? I told y’all not to worry. 🙂 Just kidding, this is a really nice pickup. Great job by Coach Fuente and the boys.
