Virginia Tech’s defense, which finished the 2017 season as one of the best in the country, now has even more holes to fill next season.

Terrell and Tremaine Edmunds, both starters for the Hokies, announced their decision on Wednesday to forgo their final year of college eligibility and declare for the 2018 NFL Draft. The two brothers announced their decision on Twitter.

Tremaine, who just wrapped up his junior season at Virginia Tech, is projected to be a first-round pick by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay. Tremaine started at linebacker for two-plus seasons, totaling 226 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and four forced fumbles in his career. At 6-foot-5 and 250-pounds, Edmunds has the size and athleticism to play outside linebacker in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense at the NFL level.

Terrell, a redshirt junior, started 31 of his career 37 games. Terrell has experience at cornerback, rover and free safety, and his versatility should resonate with NFL teams. Terrell finished his Virginia Tech career with 182 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 14 pass breakups and six interceptions.

The loss of Tremaine and Terrell will be felt next season. The two combined to start 60 games for Virginia Tech, and served as anchors for the Hokies’ defense. At backer, sophomore Dylan Rivers is expected to take over for Tremaine, while Divine Deablo and Khalil Ladler are both candidates to replace Terrell at free safety.

  1. Class guys & a class family! Hokie Nation is better because of them. We certainly will miss them but it is their time to make their way to the NFL. Best of Luck on the journey! Go Hokies!!

  2. God speed to you both. Show out at the combine, give them what Blacksburg has grown to understand.

  3. Good luck fellas and thanks for being HOKIE’s – always will be!

    Next year will be FUN…tougher schedule – better O – newer D…

    GO HOKIES!

    BEAT FSU!

  4. I fully support these guys. With their dad, a NFL vet, and older brother in the league, they got super advise and counsel. I hope they do well. GO HOKIES!

  5. Congrats to these two great Hokies… go catch your dream of being in the League!!!
Thanks for the memories and looking forward to seeing you on Sundays.

    Let’s Go…Hokies!!!
    BEAT FSU!!!

  6. Excited to see Rivers, Ladler and Deablo play next year. I think these guys will step right up and play at a high level. Depth is improving. Can’t wait till next season! What to do between now and September??

  7. The game Monday night really showed the depth of a team like Alabama. They lose a starting OL member (freshman comes in and no issues), the game winning play (freshman to freshman). I hope we can continue to build quality depth across the board because that is what it will take to go head to with Clemson in our league.

  8. bittersweet, come back and get your degrees in the future. Both of you can become pro bowl players over the next decade. Hope you give back to our great school when the time is right.

  9. Those 2 guys will be missed, especially the anti-tank missile otherwise known as Tremaine. All the best to both of them. In the case of Tremaine, I think he made the right decision to come out. He’ll be drafted very highly. Next man up!

  10. If only there was one more Edmunds brother like we had four Fuller brothers.
Wonder if anything similar to those two families with one school has ever happened anywhere else.

  11. Last year is was the offense that was gutted by early entries in the draft. This year it’s the defense. Someone tell the coaches to keep a close eye on Oscar Bradburn at the end of 2018. We don’t want to lose our special teams to the draft next year!
