The most entertaining product I’ve ever seen at Virginia Tech was the 1999 and 2000 Virginia Tech football teams with Michael Vick at quarterback. Fans like to win, they like big plays, and they like points. Those two teams were easy to like.

This 2017-18 men’s basketball team isn’t the 1999 and 2000 football teams, because they don’t have a Michael Vick. Nor am I saying they’ll be as good as the 1995 (football) Hokies, or the 2005 (football) Hokies. But through two games, for my money, I don’t think I’ve seen as entertaining a product in one of the two major sports at Virginia Tech since Michael Vick resided in Blacksburg.

The Hokies knocked off Detroit Mercy 111-79 on Friday night, and they followed that up with a 132-93 thrashing of The Citadel on Sunday. The 132 points is the most Tech has ever scored in regulation, and it was the first time since 1988 that they’ve scored 100+ points in back-to-back games. I understand the level of competition, and I understand the style The Citadel plays under Duggar Baucam. But Tech has played Baucam’s teams plenty of times before (he coached VMI for ten seasons) and never dropped 132 on them, and they’ve played much worse teams than Detroit Mercy.

Detroit Mercy was picked fourth in the Horizon League this year, and they got a first-place vote. Two of their players were voted Second Team All-Horizon League. They aren’t great. But they aren’t North Carolina A&T or Presbyterian (who the Hokies will play later this season…ugh!). They’ll most likely end up as the sixth-best team the Hokies play in the non-conference portion of their schedule, and they’ll neither hurt nor help the Hokies with regards to the RPI.
