Khadim Sy Leaves Virginia Tech

Khadim Sy has left Virginia Tech. (Ivan Morozov)

Sophomore forward Khadim Sy has left the Virginia Tech basketball program.  He has withdrawn from school, but it is not yet known where he will transfer.

Sy played in 32 games with 28 starts last season as a freshman, though he usually gave way early in the game to senior Zach LeDay.  He averaged 4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Sy was expected to back up Kerry Blackshear this season.  Blackshear was impressive as a true freshman two years ago before redshirting due to injury last year.  The loss of Sy, along with the torn ACL of Ty Outlaw, has thrown Tech’s frontcourt situation into a flux.

Former walk-on Nick Fullard was awarded with a scholarship earlier this week.  At 6-10, 235, he’s the only other player on the roster besides Blackshear who has the size to play in the paint at the center position.

  1. Is Sy transferring to a program with more playing time for him or is he quitting BB? Perhaps he was just not developing as he and Buzz had hoped. If we are losing a strong 5 in a year or two, then it hurts and I wonder a bit about the program. If we are losing a player who cannot meet the expectations and wants an easier place to get minutes, then it hurts (everyone) but you cannot wonder about the program. You can just wish it were easier to recruit strong big men.

  2. Seen this before. We just can’t keep players on bb team. Don’t know the details and probably won’t know but I do trust Buzz and keep hoping we can recruit better players who like Tech and will be committed to our program. This is disappointing; however, so is life at times. You just have to move forward and keep the faith!

  3. Sy was a body that got LeDay the sixth man award. But a body we could have used this year, hoping to develop more and more. small ball. Gonna hurt to face giant teams like FSU and UNC. Otherwise if no one else gets hurt, we will compete. Good luck Sy. The transfers that have left tech could field a team, nature of the business these days.

  4. Another ‘marginal’ player “out the door” ! As hard as Buzz works recruiting, the ‘poor guy’ actually deserves much better !!!

    1. I would argue that most freshman are marginal and that’s especially applicable to post men. They make their biggest move after their freshman and sophomore seasons (adding weight, adapting to schedule, etc). However, I think all but Hudson and Sy were guys that Buzz was ok with losing or frankly encouraged them to transfer for better opportunities.

    1. I think its just a numbers game. There simply aren’t that many quality big men.

Quality guards are a dime a dozen.

  5. Unfortunate turn of events. I was not a big fan of Sy last year – he got pushed around in the paint and his offensive game was weak. However, I had hoped he would improve and be able to play more this year. His departure means that VT will again struggle to match up with teams that have size in the front line.

    1. I have never been a huge fan of most of VT’s big men since as long as I have been an avid fan of the program. You cited the main reason why: they never were good at maximizing their size advantage. For whatever reasons they have either been uncoachable or we have had bad big men coaches.

Regardless, however, never like seeing players leave the program so close to the start of the season. I just hope Sy is making the best decision for himself without unneccessarily hurting the team, as I know that is what Buzz would want. Hope Blackshear can stay healthy!
