Armani Chatman Gives Virginia Tech First In-State Commitment for Class of 2018

Armani Chatman camped for Virginia Tech on June 13 at Hampton University, in hopes to impress the Hokies’ coaching staff. Late Friday night, Chatman committed.

Chatman is a 5-foot-11 and 175-pound athlete from Bishop Sullivan High School in Virginia Beach, Va. Chatman, who is transferring to Bishop Sullivan from Bayside High School this fall, is rated as a 4-star recruit by Rivals and as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports. Chatman holds several Power 5 offers, including Maryland, NC State and West Virginia.

Chatman is a versatile player who could play defensive back or wide receiver for Virginia Tech. Tech could see him as a slot receiver who could fill the void left by Bryce Thompson, or as a defensive back to add to an already talented secondary class.

Virginia Tech gets another benefit from earning a commitment from Chatman β€” connecting with Bishop Sullivan. The private high school has become a powerhouse program on the East Coast, and has been home to multiple high-level recruits in recent years. After missing out on Tahj Capehart late last cycle, Chatman’s commitment should give the Hokies’ momentum within the school.

The Hokies now have 14 commitments for the Class of 2018. Chatman could either be the third receiver in this class, joining Darryle Simmons and Tre Turner, or be the sixth defensive back. Nasir Peoples, Braxton Clark, DJ Crossen, Nadir Thompson and Chamarri Conner are all committed to the Hokies in the secondary, though Thompson could play both ways as well.

Note: The original article incorrectly stated Chatman was rated as a 3-star recruit by Rivals. The article has since been updated.

        1. Forgive me, I’ve been out of town and have had limited time to get everything taken care of.
