Virginia Tech Recruiting Update: Walker to the ‘Noles, Hokies Continue Sending Out Offers

We’ve officially entered the offseason for most of collegiate athletics, meaning that recruiting is in the front of just about every coach’s mind. With that said, let’s take a look at the most recent news in Virginia Tech recruiting.

Walker commits to Florida State

The MJ Walker saga is over.

Virginia Tech has put the fullcourt press on Walker since the Hokies became a contender in late April, when Walker took an official visit. The Hokies were considered a slight favorite since that visit, but Walker’s official visit to UCLA on May 14 definitely changed things. Since that point, Walker has trended towards the Bruins. UCLA was considered a heavy favorite heading into Wednesday morning, when Walker picked Florida State.

Walker gives Florida State six commitments in the Class of 2017. None of those six recruits play point guard, which is where Walker has stated he wants to play.

Virginia Tech holding a silent commitment?

In case you’ve been living underneath a rock for the last week, you’ve seen this tweet from Wide Receivers Coach Holmon Wiggins.

That’s usually the “bat signal” for a commitment. The player hasn’t yet announced his commitment, and at this point, we’re not sure when he will. Sources have said that it will likely be relatively soon, but that even Virginia Tech isn’t sure when it will be announced. There is zero concern on the Tech end, and the staff is excited for this to get done.

Football extends more offers

Virginia Tech will continue to offer scholarships for the rest of the spring and likely into the summer, as the coaches look to fill their class. Here are all of the recent scholarship offers as of Tuesday afternoon.

Class of 2018: offensive linemen Wyatt Campbell, Jovaughn Gwyn and Josh Knipfel, wide receivers Jeshaun Jones and Daevon Robinson, cornerback Tanner Ingle 

Class of 2019: defensive end Joseph Anderson and offensive linemen Logan Brown and Spencer Brown

Class of 2020: defensive lineman Treyshaun Mitchell and tight end/offensive lineman Tate Ratledge

You can expect to see more offensive linemen to be offered throughout the rest of the recruiting cycle. As Chris Coleman noted yesterday in his TSL Pass article, Virginia Tech is expected to sign at least four offensive linemen in this class. To do that, the Hokies have cast a wide net. Campbell is an unranked lineman from South Carolina, Gwyn is a 3-star recruit from Charlotte, N.C. and Josh Knipfel is a JUCO recruit from Iowa Western Community College, the same school AJ Bush attended.

Jeshaun Jones is a 3-star receiver from Florida and Daevon Robinson is a 3-star recruit from New Jersey. Robinson also plays defensive back, and could be a target there as the Hokies are starting to fill up at receiver.

Tanner Ingle is a 3-star recruit from Orlando, FL, and goes to the same high school that Robert Porcher IV attended — Dr. Phillips. Rivals lists Ingle as an athlete, but he’s being recruited as a defensive back by Virginia Tech.

Joseph Anderson is a 4-star defensive end from Murfreesboro, TN. At 6-foot-4, 235-pounds, there’s a chance he could grow enough to be moved inside, but he’s an end for now. Anderson holds offers from Notre Dame, Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson and several other Power 5 programs.

Treyshaun Mitchell is a name to keep an eye on. He’s the brother of Teradja Mitchell, one of the best players in the state for the Class of 2018. By the way, Teradja is expected to announce his decision on June 2 at Bishop Sullivan.

  1. a blessing in disguise? now coach can out and a big. we were severely beaten on the glass game in game out last season.

  2. Bummer. I think we lost a good one and to have to play against him in conference. I do like our recruits. Buzz still has the 15th best recruiting class in the country.

  3. Well at least that choice by Walker makes sense versus UCLA. Kinda dumbfounded why he was strongly considering us as we are loaded at the point. Maybe it was a strong connection to Buzz.
