Virginia Tech football announced on Wednesday that Tech and Arizona have agreed to play a home-and-home series starting in 2029.

The series will start with the Wildcats hosting the Hokies on Sept. 8, 2029.  Virginia Tech is hosting Arizona on Aug. 30, 2030.

“Even though this series is 13 years away, we felt it was a unique opportunity to schedule a Pac-12 team home and home,” said Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock in a press release. “Strength of schedule and securing high-quality, Power 5 opponents will continue to be paramount in the College Football Playoff era. Arizona AD Greg Byrne and I have a good relationship and we started this discussion back in the offseason.”

The last time Virginia Tech played a Pac-12 team was in the 2013 Sun Bowl, when the Hokies lost to UCLA 42-12. The last time Virginia Tech played a road game west of the Mississippi River was in 2002, when Tech defeated Texas A&M 13-3.

  1. I don’t get this match-up. What do we have in common with Arizona? Were there no more big name Big 10 or SEC schools we could find a match up with? I like the big name opponents from those 2 conferences but I’d gladly take one of the lesser names over Arizona. I’d be much more excited if this was a basketball pairing and it was this year.

  2. I’ll be lucky, if I remember where Arizona is by then. We’ll probably be on our 2nd or 3rd post Beamer coach by then. VT 30- AU 13

  3. Awesome news. Wait did you say 2029? Hold on, I just told my 2 yr old as she is the only one who will still be living.

      1. Great ! I saw the Stones in Raleigh and Keith, Mick, Ronnie and Charlie could have been in their thirties.

  4. That first game will be a month before I retire. Then again, the retirement age could be upped to 75 by 2029.

  5. I hate using one of Hillary’s comments BUT “at this point what difference does it make”?

  6. When was the last time we scheduled a home-and-home and got the home game in Blacksburg first?

  7. I’m not worrying about putting that on my schedule. I’ll be 82 and 83 when that series is played. I’ll be lucky to be among the quick when those games are played, and 100% certain I will not be going to games, assuming I am among the quick.

  8. Our last game west of the Mississippi River was, literally, our last game . . . the Independence Bowl in Shreveport against Tulsa. The last regular season game west of the Mississippi River was at Nebraska.
