Virginia Tech Weekly Recruiting Update: July 25-31

The good news kept on coming for Virginia Tech on the recruiting trail, as the Hokies landed a premiere prospect for the Class of 2019. Here’s your weekly recruiting update.

Virginia Tech lands Tayvion “Tank” Land

Tayvion Land is the first commitment for the Hokies in the ’19 class, and he’s a big one.

Land, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound cornerback from Bishop Sullivan High School in Virginia Beach, VA., is expected to be a top-level recruit. Local athletes took notice of Land’s commitment.

The fact that Mitchell, who’s a 5-star prospect for the ’18 class, took the time to react to Land’s commitment means that Land is a respected prospect. It could also help Virginia Tech in Mitchell’s recruitment; he also plays for Bishop Sullivan. Of course, it’s no guarantee that Land stays committed, but the word is that Land is a huge Virginia Tech fan and didn’t want to be anywhere other than Blacksburg.

Assorted Virginia Tech football recruiting news

Class of 2017 3-star offensive lineman Johnny Jordan out of Washington, DC. has committed to Maryland. The Hokies were in the running for Jordan after offering him a scholarship on June 3. Jordan has 19 scholarship offers in total, including Boston College, Louisville, Marshall, Memphis, North Carolina and Pittsburgh.

Class of 2017 safety Marquis Waters committed to Duke on Sunday. Waters has 22 scholarship offers including 13 Power 5 offers. Virginia Tech offered Waters on April 7.

In some better news for Tech fans, Class of 2017 defensive back Kenny Bennett listed Virginia Tech in his top five schools.  Bennett, listed at 6-foot-2 and 196-pounds, is a 3-star recruit out of Philadelphia. Bennett has nine scholarship offers, but only three of them are from Power 5 schools. Maryland, Pittsburgh, UMass, Temple and Virginia Tech are all still in the running.

Naji Marshall commits to Xavier

Naji Marshall, a 4-star small forward, was seriously considering Virginia Tech but instead is headed to Xavier.

Marshall is a really talented player and would have complemented Virginia Tech commit Nickeil Alexander-Walker, also in the Class of 2017. Marshall is ranked as the second-best recruit in the state of Maryland.

Football offers three recruits

Virginia Tech’s July 24 recruiting camp led to two offers being handed out, both for players in the Class of 2018.

Tight end Tyree Henry‘s performance at the camp was good enough to warrant a Virginia Tech offer, his third so far. Maryland and West Virginia are the only other two schools to extend a scholarship offer to Henry at this point.

Henry is listed at 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5, depending on where you look. However, after watching him at the July 24 camp, he plays much taller. He has good ball skills and uses his size advantage to beat guys on vertical routes. He definitely has enough speed to play tight end at the college level.

The other Virginia Tech offer that came out of the July 24 camp is Andrew Leota. Leota is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end from Asheville, NC., and the Hokies are his only scholarship offer at this point.

The other football offer this week went to Justin Fields, a 2018 quarterback. Fields is a 3-star prospect from Kennesaw, GA. with 15 scholarship offers. 11 of those offers are from Power 5 schools. Harvard and Yale have also offered the 6-foot-2, 210-pound quarterback.

Virginia Tech basketball staying active on recruiting trail

It’s now the end of the July recruiting period, so Buzz Williams and staff had to make sure they had another busy week.

Virginia Tech offered three players from the Class of 2017 — point guard Isaiah Washington, guard Rayshaun Hammonds and small forward Chase Johnson. Class of 2018 wing Sardaar Calhoun and power forward Immanuel Bates, as well as Class of 2019 Andrew Nembhard were all offered as well.

Washington is a 4-star prospect with nine scholarship offers. Minnesota, Seton Hall and Syracuse are some of the schools in the mix.

Hammonds is another 4-star prospect. The 6-foot-7, 190-pound big man is from Norcross, GA. and has 24 scholarship offers. Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Providence and Texas are some of the notable schools after Hammonds.

Johnson is listed at 6-foot-7 or 6-foot-8, depending on where you look. His notable offers are Arizona, Florida, Marquette and West Virginia. Johnson is from Ripley, WV.

Calhoun is a 2018 prospect who can play either the two or the three. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds and his biggest offer is from West Virginia Wesleyan, a Division II school. Calhoun plays for Essex High School in Tappahannock, VA and he’s a member of the Boo Williams AAU program.

Bates has nine scholarship offers, including Cincinnati, James Madison, Old Dominion, Richmond and VCU. Bates is listed at 6-foot-9 and 195 pounds.

Nembhard is a 6-foot-2 point guard currently playing in Canada. There are no other reported offers for Nembhard that I can find, but there’s no doubt that assistant Jamie McNeilly, who is also Canadian, could have a impact on Nembhard’s recruitment.

  1. Would love as part of the weekly updates if we have any known announcements coming up in the following week. We won’t always know, but if we do, would be good to kind of remind everyone.
