Virginia Tech Recruiting Update: July 18-24

This past weekend was an important one for Virginia Tech football, as the Hokies hosted recruits for the Blacksburg Bash as well as their last recruiting camp of the summer.

Blacksburg Bash nets four commitments for Virginia Tech

The Hokies rebounded from a rough stretch on the recruiting trail with four commitments this past weekend. Virginia Tech hosted over a dozen players for their Blacksburg Bash.

Three of the commitments are for the Class of 2017. Wide receiver Sean Savoy, offensive lineman Aiden Brown and linebacker Jaylen Griffin all gave the Hokies their word, while 2018 athlete Bryce Thompson committed as well.

Savoy is probably the best recruit out of that bunch. He’s ranked as a 3-star prospect with 12 scholarship offers. Miami, Maryland, Iowa, Penn State and East Carolina were all in pursuit of Savoy. At 5-foot-9 and 177-pounds, Savoy’s speed makes him an excellent threat in space.

Griffin, who was originally committed to California, is another commitment for the Hokies from Georgia. He joins Malik Willis and Lecitus Smith from the Peach State, and might not be the last. Griffin is a 3-star outside linebacker, and at 6-1, 205 could make a solid backer or whip in Bud Foster’s defensive scheme.

Brown’s commitment came as no surprise. After being offered just last week, Brown decided Virginia Tech was the best place for him, and you can’t blame him, as Virginia Tech was his only Power 5 offer. Brown was recently ranked as a 3-star prospect by 247Sports.

Thompson is Virginia Tech’s first commitment for the Class of 2018. His only other offer so far is East Carolina.

Other Class of 2017 attendees of the Blacksburg Bash include offensive lineman Tyran Hunt, defensive back Tariq Castro-Fields, linebacker Rayshard Ashby, defensive end Tyjuan Garbutt, wide receiver Tahj Capehart and cornerback Quran Hafiz.

Castro-Fields recently dropped his list of schools down to five, with Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State and Virginia Tech still in the running.

Linebacker Rayshard Ashby is already a Virginia Tech commit. His presence makes it seems like his commitment is rock solid.

Garbutt’s presence should be comforting to Hokie fans. Sure, it doesn’t mean he will recommit to Virginia Tech, but the fact that the coaching staff could get him back on campus is an encouraging sign.

Hafiz is currently an Iowa State commit, but recently told 247Sports that he will indeed return to Virginia Tech and make an official visit as well.

Notables from the ’18 class include running back Marcus Caldwell, quarterback Dejuan Ellis and linebacker Dax Hollifield.

Three reported offers from July 24 camp

Janaz Jordan, Darryle Simmons and Chris Tyree have all reportedly been offered this past weekend after attending the one-day recruiting camp on Sunday.

Virginia Tech is Jordan’s first scholarship offer. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle plays for Bethel High School in Hampton, VA.

Simmons is a member of the 2018 class and has seven scholarship offers. Penn State, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech are all in pursuit of Simmons. As a rising junior, Simmons is already 6-foot-2 and 196-pounds, which means he could be a big target by the time he gets to school.

Tyree is a Class of 2020 athlete, who has an offer from Marshall as well.

Other reported football offers this week: Class of 2017 Toryque Bateman, Class of 2018 John Harris, Derion Kendrick and John Morgan and Class of 2019 DeMarcco Hellams.

Kendrick is one of the top prospects in South Carolina. The 4-star wide receiver has 14 offers already, all from Power 5 programs. The biggest names include Clemson, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Virginia Tech still in the race for Minor, Peters

Class of 2017 offensive lineman Marcus Minor listed the Hokies in his top seven remaining schools.

Minor is a 6-foot-4, 283-pound tackle with 26 scholarship offers, and is ranked as a 4-star prospect.

Jordyn Peters, a ’17 defensive back narrowed his list to six schools on Sunday.

Peters is a 3-star recruit with 15 total scholarship offers.

Three more basketball offers

Still in the middle of the July recruiting period, the Hokies extended three more offers: Class of 2017 Wabissa Bede and Class of 2019 Joey Baker and Anthony Harris.

Bede, a 3-star point guard from Lowell, MA., has picked up three offers in the last few days. Notable schools after Bede include Boston College, Dayton, East Carolina, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Providence, Seton Hall and Temple, as well as Virginia Tech.

Baker, a guard/forward from Fayetteville, NC., has seven offers already, including Texas, Clemson and Tennessee.

Harris is a 6-foot-2 point guard playing in Fairfax, VA. for Paul VI High School.
