Catching Up With WR Commit Phillip Patterson

It has been almost two weeks since he made his college announcement in front of friends and family at Bayside High School (Virginia Beach, VA), but Phillip Patterson is still pumped about his commitment to Virginia Tech.

“It feels great,” said Patterson, who announced his decision on August 1. “It was the best choice for me. I’m excited to be a part of Virginia Tech.”

Patterson, a 6’2”, 185-pound wide receiver/defensive back prospect, spurned offers from Duke, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, Tennessee and Wake Forest in order to stay in-state and play for the Hokies. The Marlins standout narrowed his list to the above seven schools this summer. He visited all seven schools, including trips to Tennessee and Virginia Tech in July.

“I put in a top six about a month before I committed. Tennessee offered the next day, so it was then a top seven,” Patterson recalled. “I looked at depth charts and saw what coaches really wanted me. I saw who wanted me most. Virginia Tech has plenty of spots open, so I’ll get to compete for early playing time. They said I could wear my number eight. I’ve been wearing that number since the 10th grade. A good friend of mine wore it before, so I want to keep it.”
