Running Backs: 4 is the Ideal Number

Remember last August when Shane Beamer was toying with the idea of not redshirting Travon McMillian and actually using six tailbacks in football games?  The coaching staff ultimately vetoed that idea (fortunately).  Eight months later, the situation is completely different.

Back in August, the Hokies had J.C. Coleman, Trey Edmunds, Joel Caleb, Jerome Wright, Marshawn Williams, Shai McKenzie, Travon McMillian and DJ Reid all getting work at tailback.  That’s eight guys.  This April, only four (or perhaps five) of those guys are working at the tailback position.

While I don’t like to see players get hurt, and I don’t like to see guys not work out, from an efficiency standpoint four running backs is a much more ideal situation than eight.  If I’m Shane Beamer, the following four guys would be my running backs for the rest of the spring…
