Houshun Gaines’ Virginia Tech visit got real exciting really quickly.

“When I got there, I registered, and then Coach Wiles told me he wanted me to meet Coach Beamer,” said Gaines, recalling his trip to Blacksburg this past Saturday. “Coach Wiles and Coach Beamer, they met with me and my dad. That’s when Coach Beamer [offered a scholarship]. It was shocking and just amazing.”

At 6’4”, 210 pounds, the Nash (Rocky Mount, N.C.) product is a terrific athlete. His frame, athleticism and speed could translate well to multiple positions on the major college level, but for now the Hokies see him at one position in particular.

“Coach Wiles is talking about putting my hand in the dirt,” Gaines said. “He said they think I have the ability to be a pretty good pass rusher. He thinks that’s what I’m best at. I may have some outside linebacker in me, but as far as I know they want me as a defensive end. I’ve been playing defensive end since I started playing football, but to be honest I think I can produce wherever.”
