Place-kicker Michael Santamaria verbally committed to Virginia Tech last summer and he plans to sign a letter of intent with the Hokies on February 5. Once he graduates from Athens Academy (Athens, GA) this spring, one of three scenarios will play out.
1) Santamaria enrolls at Virginia Tech this summer and plays this fall, meaning he would be on scholarship this summer.
2) He enrolls this August but does not play this fall, so he would take classes at Tech in the fall but not go on scholarship until January.
3) He grayshirts, enrolling in January of 2015 and goes on scholarship at that point.
“As soon as I start with the football team, I’m on scholarship,” Santamaria said. “I’ll be on scholarship as soon as this summer and as late as January.”
Santamaria expects one of the first two scenarios to take place. Whenever he suits up for Hokies football team, he has one goal in mind.
