Asante no longer with team

Kevin Asante makes a tough catch over Donovan Riley.

Rising r-sophomore wide receiver Kevin Asante is no longer a member of the football program.  This news was revealed on Sunday evening at the ACC Football Kickoff in Greensboro, NC.

Asante played in 10 games as a r-freshman last season, and made one start.  He caught two passes for a total of 18 yards.  He was listed #2 on the depth chart at flanker coming out of spring practice.  His absence will open the door for playing time to other players.

Here’s now Tech’s depth chart looked at both wide receiver spots coming out of the spring (with Asante not included).

Split end: D.J. Coles (r-Sr.), Joshua Stanford (r-Fr.), Charley Meyer (r-Fr.)
Flanker: Demitri Knowles (r-So.), Joel Caleb (r-Fr.), Willie Byrn (r-Jr.)

Tech also now has an extra scholarship available.  The Hokies could elect to give it to a walkon receiver who will see playing time, such as Charley Meyer or Willie Byrn.

  1. Is he still in school? I read a few places that he’s not with the program “this year” suggesting it’s temporary.

  2. I’m almost afraid to visit TSL over the summer. Then again, living life as an ostrich has never been a viable alternative.

The new coaches may be relying on their own players sooner than they expected.

    1. Good things have happened too. No need to put your head in the sand just yet.

    1. No official reason given for his departure……yet, but the timing for this announcement is peculiar, as Asante was not listed on this weekend’s media guide that was printed a little over a month ago i.e. this has been in the works.

  3. Wow……. What an offseason it has been for Hokie Football. Hope we are trimming up for the best; only time will tell.
