Hokies hoping for a big DL class

Virginia Tech is after a very strong group of defensive linemen in the 2014 class. In the last week, we’ve had good news and bad news with regards to defensive line recruiting.

DE Da’Shawn Hand : Virginia Tech’s chances of landing Da’Shawn Hand remain the same as they’ve ever been. Though he just visited Ohio State, the Hokies and Michigan are still thought to be the top two schools in play for the nation’s #1 ranked prospect. I’d give Tech the edge at this point, based on location and familiarity, but Michigan is clearly a strong player. I don’t think he’ll wait until late in the process to decide, like many 5-star prospects. Lots of 5-star guys like the attention, but Hand isn’t that type of recruit. I wouldn’t be surprised if he made his decision by the end of the summer.

DE Jalyn Holmes : Last summer, Virginia Tech was considered the leader for Holmes. He has visited Tech multiple times, but it seems like the more he visits, the further Tech drops down his list. The general opinion is that he’s just not a big fan of the area. He likes the coaches, the program, and he’s got nothing against the school, he’s just not comfortable with the area. It’s not over, but I don’t think getting him back on campus will help.

Andrew Brown watches on at VT’s camp on June 2, 2013

DT Andrew Brown : Brown visited Virginia Tech with his father on Sunday, and the Hokies significantly improved their chances with the 5-star defensive tackle. Brown loves Tech’s music department, and he’s very comfortable with the coaching staff. He intends to take one of his five official visits to Virginia Tech. Bryan Stinespring has done an excellent job getting the Hokies back in this one, and Brown is giving Tech a fair shake.
