Scouting Report: Kyle Chung

Kyle Chung
6’4” 280 lbs
Position in HS: TE/DE
Likely Position at VT: OG

Kyle Chung with primary recruiter Charley Wiles at Virginia Tech’s July 14 Camp.

What I Like: Chung is a guy who is technically solid in the run game.  He stays low, gets off the ball well and does a very good job of positioning defensive players away from the running lanes.  Chung moves well for a big man and shows excellent “feet chop” as an offensive lineman.  This leads you to believe that he is a hard worker and understands the importance of footwork at the line.  Good footwork is something that can be taught but it sure helps when a lineman can show in his high school tape that he keeps moving his feet.  A lot of time that foot chop is about instincts and competitive fire.  The easiest way to measure if a big man is competitive enough at the point of attack is to watch his feet.  If he doesn’t keep his feet moving, he is relying too much on upper-body strength which is a sign that things may have come too easy for him in high school.

You can tell from Chung’s tape that he is a smart, physical player.  His footwork, smarts and physical play make him an ideal Guard in Grimes’ system.

Things to Improve: Chung needs to get stronger at the point of attack.  He put on a lot of weight between his Junior and senior years in high school and based on the fact that his dad is an NFL coach with experience in strength & conditioning, I am going to assume this was all good weight.  I projected Kyle to play Guard at the next level and his weight gain in high school is verification of that projection.  His body will change a little bit over the next few years but it would not surprise me to see Chung play at around 300 lbs.  At his height, that means he could be an NFL player as long as his weight gain is in his chest, shoulders, lats, glutes, quads and hammies.  I’d like to see Kyle build muscle mass in those large muscle groups that help a lineman hold strong at the point-of-attack and win battles in the trenches.
