Today we’ll continue our series about r-senior quarterbacks by focusing on Jim Druckenmiller and his 1996 season.  Druckenmiller was a first round pick in the 1997 NFL Draft, and although his NFL career did not pan out, he was only the third first round pick in Virginia Tech history.  He was the starting quarterback for two seasons and led the Hokies to a Sugar Bowl win over Texas and an Orange Bowl berth against Nebraska, so he’s remembered fondly by Tech fans.

But, how good was he really?  Was he a consistent player?  Did he look like a first round pick throughout his career?  The actual numbers might surprise you.

Rickey Bustle returned to Blacksburg in 1995 following his one year stint at South Carolina.  (Apparently the grass didn’t turn out to be greener on the other side.)  Jim Druckenmiller won the starting quarterback job before the 1995 season.  He was in a competition with Al Clark, but Clark went down with an injury in the spring of 1995, and Druckenmiller pulled ahead and won the job by default.  Tech fans didn’t know a lot about him, other than the fact that he had completed a few passes late in blowouts in the 1994 season.
