Grimes Tries to Rebuild Tech’s Line

Jeff Grimes

Besides building toughness, the #1 job for Jeff Grimes heading into the 2013 is to find his five best offensive linemen. The Hokies are fortunate enough to have some versatile pieces up front, and Grimes should be able to move some guys around in an effort to find his top five players.

Tech will have 14 scholarship offensive linemen this spring, in varying stages of readiness. Don’t expect Grimes to field a very deep offensive line this year. He’s not a miracle worker. Those 14 players include a couple of true freshman who probably aren’t ready, and at least one r-freshman who probably won’t be ready. A few of the upperclassmen are question marks as well. No matter how you slice it, Grimes will have his work cut out for him. He has to get these guys tougher, and he’s got to get them playing with better technique.

The initial spring depth chart should be announced early next week, once 6am workouts are over. I have no idea what it will look like. I do expect to see a position change or two. I don’t think we can look at last year’s depth chart and project what this year’s will look like.

First, let’s begin by looking at the offensive tackle positions.
