VT Eyes Several At Briar Woods

Over the past three seasons, Ashburn (VA) Briar Woods’ varsity football program boasts three AA Division 4 state championships, 42 wins, and only three losses.  All three of Briar Woods’ football teams — varsity, junior varsity, and the freshman team — went undefeated in 2012, winning 33 games in total.

Given the run of success, it should come as no surprise to know that head coach Charlie Pierce’s varsity squad has produced some of the state’s top talents the past two seasons.  Alex Carter accepted a scholarship to Stanford in the class of 2012, and in his freshman year with the Cardinal he earned a starting spot at cornerback.  Linebacker Matt Rolin is now a freshman linebacker at the University of Florida after enrolling in Gainesville in January of 2013, and Falcons senior tight end Cam Serigne recently signed a letter of intent with Wake Forest.  Coach Pierce says five other seniors, including Falcons all-time leading rusher Cory Colder, also have the talent to stick somewhere on the college level.

Signing Day for the class of 2013 has come and gone, so the focus now turns to the class of 2014.  Coach Pierce discussed the top prospects in Briar Woods’ rising senior class, including quarterback/free safety  Trace McSorley , offensive lineman Jared Coker , offensive/defensive lineman Nick Merletti, and athlete Melvin Holland Jr.

McSorley, a 6’1″, 180-pound prospect, has been Briar Woods varsity’s starting quarterback each of the past two seasons.  He also started at free safety in 2012.
