Stat Pack: Virginia Tech 20, Georgia Tech 17

Chris Coleman will post his game recap later, but for now, we’ll debut a new feature called “Stat Pack”, which we dabbled with in the last few games of the 2011-12 basketball season. It’s an attempt to shed some light on the key stats of the game, and to look at things in a different way.

Here we go, the Stat Pack from the Hokies’ 20-17 overtime win against Georgia Tech:

— The win was Virginia Tech’s first on the final play of the game since Shayne Graham kicked his 44-yard game winner at West Virginia in 1999. By my count, that’s a span of 163 games.

The Hokies held Paul Johnson’s Georgia Tech offense under 200 yards rushing for the first time. (Yes, there’s a Yellow Jacket ball carrier in there.)

— Last season, Georgia Tech averaged 5.73 yards per carry and 316.5 yards per game. Monday night, the Hokies held them to 3.5 ypc and 192 net yards rushing. The Jackets were only held below 200 yards one time last season (Miami, 48 carries, 134 yards, Oct. 22, 2011).
