Burke Talks VT Camp, Commitment

Virginia Tech’s coaches certainly knew of Brunswick County (Lawrenceville, VA) rising junior Xavier Burke prior to last Saturday’s one-day camp.  A scholarship offer was a possibility, but it wasn’t a definite until the 6’3″, 245-pound tight end/defensive line prospect turned in strong performances in both the early morning testing and afternoon drills/one-on-ones.

The 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, and vertical jump are traditionally part of the testing session at Virginia Tech’s one-day camps.  Burke didn’t know his shuttle time, but he felt good about what he did in the 40 (4.8 seconds) and the vertical leap (27 inches).  He felt especially good, though, about his work in the afternoon.  Burke did defensive line and tight end drills, and then he worked with the tight ends in the one-on-ones.

“I felt I did great,” Burke said, referring to his afternoon performance at tight end.  “The moves we were working on in drills, I applied them in the one-on-ones.  To be honest, I was killing those linebackers.

“Once I showed the coaches my talent and how athletic I am, I think they were amazed and decided to offer.”
