Meyer Looking To Make Mark At VT

Senior Charley Meyer had full scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, James Madison, Navy, Richmond and William & Mary.  The guaranteed money would’ve been nice, but he wanted to go to Virginia Tech, which could only offer a recruited walk-on spot to the 6’2″, 205-pound wide receiver prospect.  The Benedictine (Richmond, VA) standout went with his heart and committed to the Hokies, and he hopes to take advantage of an opportunity to earn a scholarship after his freshman season.

“After my first year, [the Virginia Tech coaches] will let me know if I’ve earned a scholarship or not,” Meyer said.  “That’s one of the things they promised me.  I really like that, because I feel I can go in there and show them what I can do.”

Meyer hasn’t looked back since making his college choice over two months ago.  Fueled by the prospect of earning a scholarship and playing the highest level of major college football, he has worked rigorously, taking only a few weeks off this month to recover from walking Pneumonia.  He feels close to 100-percent now, though, and expected to restart his training this week.

Nigel Williams and Charley Meyer on Signing Day 2012

“[Virginia Tech’s coaches] sent (Benedictine teammate and fellow Hokie 2012 recruit) Nigel (Williams) a workout book.  I hadn’t got it because at the time I hadn’t been accepted.  I am now.  But back in February, I just got the workout from Nigel,” Meyer said, discussing what he has done to prepare for his freshman year at Virginia Tech.  “It had all different workouts for skills and linemen.  I am lifting after school and doing some of the running they will have us doing when we get there.  Coach (Kevin) Sherman sent me a packet on the wide receivers.  I’ve been doing some of the catching drills and the route running drills from the packet.  I’ve been waking up at 4:30 and doing footwork drills, running routes, and working on getting off press coverage.  I’m doing this every day for about an hour and a half.  I’m doing stuff like the speed ladder to develop more quickness.  I lift three days a week, just going by the way the booklet is structured.  I work with a speed coach on Tuesday.  I work on my acceleration and getting faster off the ball.  I do resistance work with bands.  I’m also doing hard stretches to work on my flexibility.”
