Woody Baron Talks Grayshirt

As the Roanoke Times reported last week, Brentwood Academy (Nashville, TN) defensive lineman Woody Baron will not enroll at Virginia Tech this summer and will instead delay enrollment until January of 2013.  The news was perhaps surprising, but Baron says grayshirting has been a possibility since he verbally committed last July.

“It’s definitely mutual,” said Baron, who signed a letter of intent with the Hokies in February.  “The day I committed, they told me that was the deal.  If I wanted to accept, I might have to be in the following class.  I weighed it out.  I talked to Coach Wiles, so nobody is getting blindsided.  They decided to gray-shirt me.  I’ll get extra weightlifting and an extra spring to get a little more experienced.

“As time goes on, I feel better about it.  I’ll get to lift more, train more, and get stronger and faster before I take the field.  That something I’m appreciative of.”

A knee injury hindered Baron for much of his senior season, but he is healthy now and training for major college football.
