6’8″, 210-pound small forward Marshall Wood leaves Rustburg High School (Rustburg, VA) as the school’s all-time leading scorer.  His best season came as a senior, when he averaged 24 points and 13 rebounds per game, up from his junior season averages of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest.  Wood amassed 1,402 points in his high school career, so perhaps the Hokies can look forward to an infusion of offense from him next season.

“He’s 6’8″ and he is really long. He has a 7’1 1/2″ wing span. He’s really athletic and he can really shoot the ball,” Rustburg head coach Brantley Shields said last fall when describing Wood’s game.  Shields’ team went 17-7 in the 2011/2012 season.  “He can block shots. He can handle, but he needs to get better there. He plays inside and outside for us. He’s a stretch 4 for us. He can pick and pop. Just to give you a visual, the [Tech] coaches believe he is a mixture of A.D. Vassallo and Deron Washington. They think he can do a lot of different things for them. He’s really versatile. If he improves his ball-handling, I think he could be really good.”

Wood comes from a highly athletic family, and he won’t be the first in his family to play collegiate sports.  His father played college basketball at Lynchburg College.  On his father’s side, Wood’s grandfather played college basketball at West Virginia State.  And his uncle played football at James Madison but was an all-state basketball player in high school.

After making official visits to the University of Richmond, VCU, and Virginia Tech, Wood verbally committed to Seth Greenberg and company.  He then signed a letter of intent during the Early Signing Period, and he’ll enroll at Tech on July 2nd.
