UNC’s Punishment Doesn’t Fit the Crimes

In case you missed it, on Monday the NCAA handed down their punishment to UNC for multiple rules violations.  In my opinion, it was more than a slap on the wrist, but it also didn’t fit the crime.

To refresh your memory, UNC was found guilty of academic fraud, impermissible agent benefits, ineligible participation and a failure to monitor its football program.  Note that they avoided the dreaded “lack of institutional control” charge, and that’s probably the biggest reason why they avoided a harsher punishment.

Still, compared to the depth of the investigation and what the Tar Heels were found guilty of, I think they got off a little light.  Why am I writing about this on a Tech site?  Because the schools compete directly in recruiting.  Remember Travis Hughes , Marquise Williams and Landon Turner ?  All of those are guys who picked UNC over Tech in the 2011 class because of promises from Butch Davis that the situation would turn out fine for the school.  Obviously, Davis lied.  He seems to be pretty good at that.

The NCAA handed down a list of eight penalties to UNC.
