Notes From The VHSL Division 3 Final

Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) took the field Saturday without star defensive tackle Korren Kirven , who suffered an ankle injury in the first half of the Division 3 state semifinal against Cave Spring. Thanks to a total team effort, the Bees persevered without one of its top players to capture a 34-33 win over high-powered James Monroe in the Division 3 state championship.

Game Summary

The Bees burst out to a 17-0 first quarter lead, capitalizing on great field position thanks to two James Monroe turnovers and a poor punt. The Yellow Jackets put together a solid drive to cut the lead to 10 before senior Mark Boyd’s 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave Brookville a 24-7 lead.

Ahead 24-14 with less than two minutes remaining in the second, Brookville went to the air in hopes of getting another score before half. 6’3″, 220-pound junior defensive end Roy Robinson had other ideas, snagging junior quarterback Kendall BeCraft’s attempted swing pass with one hand for what would be one of the game’s biggest plays. BeCraft managed to make the tackle before Robinson could score, but James Monroe would punch it in just a few plays later.
