Highland Springs (VA) standout Jerome Wright has become the latest high school senior to verbally commit to Virginia Tech, multiple outlets are reporting. The 6’2″, 220-pound Wright, a first-team all-Capital district performer at running back this season, made the pledge while on an official visit to Tech this weekend.

In Wright, the Hokies score one of the true sleepers in the 2012 class. He was home-schooled through his junior year of high school, and he suited up for the Central Virginia Homeschool Disciples for three seasons before arriving at Highland Springs for this season. Another Tech 2012 class commit, offensive tackle Augie Conte, also played for the Disciples before enrolling at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (Powhatan, VA) in 2010.

“I don’t rip and rave about a lot of kids, but when they’re good they’re good. He is a linebacker that can really run. Whatever position he plays, he could be good. He could be a great player in the offensive backfield, or he could be a good addition on the defensive end,” Springers head coach Loren Johnson told TechSideline.com in an earlier interview.

Wright received interest from Appalachian State, Ohio and Virginia, but Virginia Tech was the only school to come through with an offer. The talented athlete will enroll at Tech in January of 2013.

An excellent student, Wright carries a 3.8 GPA and takes AP and Honors courses.

“He’s a phenomenal kid,” Johnson said of Wright. “The kid brings maturity to the table at this age. Jerome has a mature, workman mentality. His thought the entire year has been to prove to the guys that he is worthy of wearing our uniform. If he takes that mentality to college, he’ll be fine.”

The Hokies now have 26 commitments in the 2012 class. Three of those recruits – RB J.C. Coleman, ATH Der’Woun Greene and CB Donaldven Manning – plan to enroll this coming January, while as many as four – Conte, WR/ATH Thomas Smith, OL Adam Taraschke and Wright – could enroll in January of 2013.

TSL will have more on Wright’s commitments in the coming days. Clover Hill (Midlothian, VA) star Joel Caleb was also scheduled to be in Blacksburg this weekend, and we plan to have more on his experience as well.
