Virginia Tech started slow, trailed 7-6 at halftime, but rallied in the final 30 minutes to easily beat Boston College 30-14 in Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Hokies are now 7-1 overall, with a 3-1 mark in conference play. The Eagles dropped to 1-6 on the season, and are winless in ACC play.
Unfortunately, the Hokies lost two more defensive players to injuries. Bruce Taylor injured his foot after recording two sacks and never returned. Alonzo Tweedy hurt his ankle, and though he did return to the game, r-freshman Nick Dew played most of the game at whip.
Virginia Tech got another big game from r-sophomore quarterback Logan Thomas. For the third week in a row, Thomas was superb, going 22-of-36 for 268 yards and a touchdown. He also added 60 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. His favorite target was Danny Coale, who hauled in eight receptions for 118 yards.
David Wilson had a big game on the ground, most of which came in the second half. Wilson had 17 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown, including a terrific 42 yard touchdown run down the right sideline on Tech’s first drive of the third quarter. Wilson got great blocking from his receivers on the edge, broke a tackle, and took it the distance.
Logan Thomas was not sacked, and in fact the offensive line did not allow a single tackle for loss against a BC defense led by All-American linebacker Luke Kuechly. Kuechly came into the game with 99 tackles on the season, and was credited with 19 more against the Hokies.
Despite having so many players injured, the Tech defense limited Boston College to just 272 yards of total offense. James Gayle re-injured his ankle on the opening drive and never returned to the game, and Jayron Hosley did not play, as expected. Freshmen such as Luther Maddy, Corey Marshall, Detrick Bonner and Nick Dew had to play a lot. Bonner recovered a fumble late in the game, while Marshall recorded his second sack of the season.
The Hokies sacked BC quarterback Chase Rettig four times: two by Bruce Taylor, one by Corey Marshall and one by Derrick Hopkins. Linebacker Tariq Edwards also intercepted Rettig when the Eagles were threatening to score.
The Hokies outgained BC 482 to 272, despite only having 140 yards of total offense before their two-minute drive to end the second quarter that resulted in a field goal. Boston College jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after Michael Branthover shanked a nine yard punt that gave the Eagles the ball on the Tech 35.
Though the Hokies struggled for most of the first half, they scored the next 27 points of the game to take a commanding 27-7 lead. Though BC struck back with a late touchdown, Tech was able to easily close out the game with the win.
Virginia Tech will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Durham to take on the Duke Blue Devils. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30pm, and the game will be televised by The ACC Network.
