Tech Defense Puts on a Clinic Against ECU

The following is a transcription of a phone interview with Raleigh Hokie.

Half of East Carolina’s yards came on their first two possessions. Did Bud Foster make adjustments after those first two drives?

I didn’t get a chance to see the beginning of the game, because the Iowa-Iowa State game went into overtime. It was all down and distance stuff. The thing we were able to do is keep them out of third and short and second and short more of the time. When you jump offsides, instead of third and eight, it’s third and three, so they were able to move the ball down the field early in the game.

That was a clinic. They played it like I thought they would play it, nickel pretty much the whole game. They tackled well. They kept ECU from situations where they could run their hurry up. The defense was able to dictate. When I said before the season that I was really excited but didn’t know why … well, I think I know why now. I’m a defensive guy, and we thought the defense was going to be a whole lot better this year, and that’s probably why I was so excited.
