Virginia Tech’s participation in the NIT Season Tip-Off was confirmed yesterday, with the official announcement by the school. The Hokies will host Monmouth in their first game, November 14. Two other teams – George Mason and Florida International – will also play in Blacksburg on November 14, and Tech will play one of those teams on November 16.
The Hokies are the #4 overall seed in the NIT Season Tip-Off. They should easy defeat Monmouth, who went 9-21 last season while finishing #297 in the RPI.
That would set up a second round matchup with either George Mason, now coached by Paul Hewitt, or Florida International, who is coached by former NBA point guard Isaiah Thomas. George Mason returns a strong team, though Hewitt will be in his first season as their head coach.
If the Hokies go 2-0 in Blacksburg, they’ll be one of four teams to head to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals on November 23. The finals and consolation game will be held on November 25.
The other host teams of the NIT Season Tip-Off are Syracuse, Oklahoma State and Stanford. If the Hokies make it to Madison Square Garden, their likely opponent would be Syracuse, assuming the Orange get through Manhattan, Albany and Brown. Syracuse is the #1 seed of the tournament.
