Virginia Tech gained commitment number 16 on Saturday afternoon, when defensive tackle Alston Smith gave his verbal pledge. He is the first defensive tackle commit of the 2012 class.
Smith plays for Cox High School in Virginia Beach, where he had six sacks as a junior, his first season on the varsity level. He added four other tackles for loss, and had 30 tackles overall. Smith chose the Hokies over offers from Syracuse and East Carolina.
At 6-4, 260, he is projected as a defensive tackle at Tech. He participated in the camp on Saturday, with his father – Hokie great Bruce Smith – in attendance.
