Q&A with Devin Vandyke

This past weekend, Devin Vandyke became the latest rising high school senior to commit to Virginia Tech. The South County (Lorton, VA) star took some time to reflect on his decision and what separated Tech from other schools, discuss which linebacker position he may ultimately play in Bud Foster’s defense, and much more in this “Q&A” feature.

Vandyke, a 6’1″, 205-pound prospect, started at Whip linebacker for five games as a sophomore before starting all of 2010 at the Backer position. Last season he racked up over 100 tackles for South County head coach Pete Bendorf, whose defense is based off of Virginia Tech’s and implemented by former Tech graduate assistant Jon Shields several years ago.

Virginia Tech came through with an offer this past May and was one of over 10 major FBS offers Vandyke received. In the end, Tech won out over Kentucky.

Devin will join his brother, Ronny, who signed with the Hokies this past February. Ronny is awaiting final clearance from the NCAA Clearinghouse, but Coach Bendorf expects everything to be fine and for his former standout safety to enroll at Tech in August. Devin will be in Blacksburg this weekend, visiting Tech for the first time as a commitment.
