Colby Cooke Garnering High-Major Interest

Goochland (VA) place-kicker Colby Cooke enjoyed a big-time junior season, making 10 of 12 field goals — including a long of 47 yards — en route to being a consensus first-team all-state selection. Coaches from Liberty, JMU, North Carolina, Richmond, Virginia and Virginia Tech have stopped by Goochland High School this Evaluation Period to further evaluate the 6-3, 190-pound standout, who has a busy summer planned.

“I feel confident about possibly getting a few offers, but I haven’t gotten any yet,” said Cooke, who made five of nine field goals his sophomore season. “Some coaches have said that, if they see me perform like they see me kick on film, they’d offer.”

Soccer was Cooke’s number one sport before the 8th grade, when, at his uncle’s urging, he gave place-kicking a try. Cooke would make a 35-yard field goal his 8th grade season, and he has gone on to a successful high school career for Bulldogs varsity head coach Joe Fowler.

“He’s got a rocket for a leg,” Fowler said of Cooke, who also booted 27 touchbacks in 52 kick-offs last season. “He’s not a typical kicker in terms of size. He’s 6-3 or 6-4, 190 pounds. He has flexibility and quickness in his leg. He can really put a hurtin’ on the football.”
