Finney-Smith Caps Off Stellar Career In Style

Given Dorian Finney-Smith ‘s impressive accomplishments over the course of the past two seasons, it’s hard to believe that he didn’t play at all on I.C. Norcom High School’s varsity squad as a freshman. A frustrating freshman year, though, turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

“It motivated me,” Finney-Smith said. “But, I was real mad after some of those games. My family told me to keep working.”

Two seasons later, Finney-Smith and the Norcom Greyhounds would defeat a talented Petersburg Crimson Wave squad for the 2009/2010 Group AAA state championship. A junior, the Portsmouth (VA) native averaged 19.7 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks per game, earning Group AAA Player of the Year honors as a result.

Finney-Smith helped the Greyhounds repeat as state champs in 2010/2011, scoring 19 points and pulling down 17 boards in the Group AAA title game against L.C. Bird. Ranked a 5-star prospect by ESPN.com and a 4-star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Norcom’s star has developed into one of the top 2011 class prospects in the country. He’ll now take his game to Virginia Tech, the school he chose over Florida and Old Dominion, among others.
