Virginia
Tech head coach Frank Beamer announced late today that he is making further
changes to his coaching staff. Former standout defensive lineman Cornell Brown
will join the Hokie coaching staff, replacing long-time assistant Jim Cavanaugh
as outside linebackers coach. Cavanaugh will remain with the program in a
newly-created administrative position, as the director of recruiting and high
school relations.

Brown, who has spent the last three years coaching in the CFL as the
defensive line coach for the Calgary Stampeders, will also assist in coaching
the Tech defensive line. The staff changes follow changes announced earlier this
week, when Shane Beamer was announced as running backs coach, and long-time
running backs coach Billy Hite moved into a new administrative position as
assistant to the head coach and senior advisor.

The dual moves of hiring Beamer and Brown are geared towards improving
recruiting. Cavanaugh’s new position as director of recruiting and high school
relations enables him to remain with the program and provide his expertise in
the area of recruiting, where he has been arguably Tech’s most successful
recruiter for years.

The creation of the new position for Cavanaugh also mirrors what many
programs around the country are doing: creating non-coaching support staff
positions to assist in recruiting. A member of the coaching staff must hold the
title of recruiting coordinator, but many programs around the country are
creating support staffs to handle the organizational and administrative tasks
associated with recruiting. This frees up the football coaches to dedicate more
time to contact with recruits, recruits’ families, and high school coaches.

Insiders to the Virginia Tech football program are indicating on
TechSideline.com’s subscriber message boards that in terms of personnel,
coaching changes for this year are now complete. But detailed responsibilities,
recruiting territories, and which coach will hold the title of recruiting
coordinator are still being settled. There are also hints that Virginia Tech’s
whip linebacker position will be converted to more of a "standard"
outside linebacker position.

For more information on the hiring of Brown, including details of his
coaching and playing careers, as well as Jim Cavanaugh’s lengthy, productive
career, see the HokieSports.com press release linked below.
