Rumors have been swirling for several days, but now it’s official. Harrisonburg (VA) running back Michael Holmes has committed to Virginia Tech. One of the state’s most productive backs over the past two seasons, the 6-0, 200-pound Holmes chose Virginia Tech over James Madison and Virginia.

“Michael’s going to be a Hokie,” Harrisonburg head coach Tim Sarver said. “He made the decision over the weekend here. He decided before the game on Saturday.”

Holmes, the Group AA Player of the Year in 2009, helped Harrisonburg to a 13-1 record and a runner-up finish for the Group AA, Division 4 state title this season. He turned in outstanding performances in the 2010 state playoffs, rushing 49 times for 259 yards and four touchdowns in the 28-21 double-overtime win over Christiansburg, and 157 yards and three touchdowns in the state title game against Briar Woods.

“He’s a great cutback runner,” Sarver said of Holmes, who rushed for over 2,700 yards as a junior and 2,800 yards as a senior. “He runs the zone dive as well as any player I’ve seen. The other thing I think will impress Virginia Tech is he has great hands, so he can help on special teams. Certainly, he has a work ethic that is better than anybody.”
