Acree Eyes Future At VT

6-5, 295-pound Nick Acree will arrive at Virginia Tech on July 5. Acree, who graduated from Fork Union Military Academy last weekend, plans to continue to train in the weight room and rehabilitate the knee he injured last summer before arriving at Tech. The rehab continues to go well, though the massive lineman admits he is not yet fully healthy.

“I’m almost at 100-percent,” Acree said. “I’m not going to lie. There is a lot more to the injury than I thought, but I’m almost there. I will be close when I get to Virginia Tech. I’m definitely strengthening the leg. I’m basically going to keep training and get my flexibility back and the kinks worked out.”

Acree could potentially play on the offensive line, but he is projected to play defensive tackle at Tech. Red-shirting this upcoming season is an option, but for now Acree expects to see playing time as a true freshman.

“I’ve talked to [the Tech coaches] and they told me they weren’t going to red-shirt me,” Acree said. “They are going to get me in scrimmages and see how I play. I think I can be a difference maker. I can be an impact player. I know I can have a big impact. If they do decide to red-shirt me, it would be because they want to further get my knee better.”
