2009 Spring Practice Report: Scrimmages Will be Key

Information about what has gone on in Virginia Tech’s first four spring
football practices is hard to find. The media has limited access, and the
players haven’t even gone through any scrimmage situations yet. However, we’ve
come across a little bit of football info that should help satisfy your
cravings.

There aren’t many position battles on this year’s team. However, the battle
between Davon Morgan and Dorian Porch at rover could be interesting. They are
rotating as starters during practice thus far. Porch will be with the #1 defense
one day, while Morgan will be a starter the next day.

Morgan opened the 2008 season as the starter at rover, but tore his ACL in
the win at Nebraska. Porch stepped in and started the remainder of the season,
and did a very good job. One source believes Morgan is ahead in the competition
right now. The first full scrimmage is this Friday, and we should have a better
idea after the coaching staff has a chance to watch that tape.

Linebacker was also expected to be a position battle this spring, but it’s
not working out this way. Barquell Rivers and Jake Johnson are the starters
right now, and it’s not really close. Rivers, a r-sophomore, is the most
experienced inside linebacker on the team, and his starting job was never really
in jeopardy.
