Hokies to Play Miami in ACC Tournament

The pairings for the 2009 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament have been announced. Virginia Tech is the #8 seed, and they’ll take on #9 seed Miami in the first game of the tournament, on Thursday at noon. The game will be televised by Raycom.

With their 63-53 loss to Florida State on Saturday, the Hokies finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record, and a 7-9 mark in the ACC. Tech will likely have to make a major run in the ACC Tournament to have a chance to earn an at-large berth for the NCAA tournament.

Virginia Tech played Miami once during the regular season. On January 25, the Hokies traveled to Miami and beat the Hurricanes 88-83 in overtime. That victory made Tech 4-1 in the ACC at the time, but they managed to only win three games the rest of the season. The ‘Canes also still have a shot at an at-large berth to the Big Dance with a big ACC Tournament run, so the Hokies will get their best shot.

The winner of the Tech-Miami game will play #1 seed North Carolina on Friday at noon. That game will be televised by Raycom and ESPN2.

Other opening round matchups include #5 Clemson vs. #12 Georgia Tech (2:30pm, Raycom), #7 Maryland vs. #10 NC State (7pm, ESPN2) and #6 Boston College vs. #11 Virginia (9:30pm, Raycom). The top four seeds get a first round bye.

Last season the Hokies were the #4 overall seed, and they won a quarterfinal matchup with #5 Miami. Tech was knocked out of the ACC Tournament in the semifinals on a last second shot by North Carolina.

This year’s ACC Tournament will be held in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. For more information, click on the link below.
