Williams Appears Solid to VT

Daniel (Central, S.C.) cornerback recruit Jerrodd Williams committed to Virginia Tech in June, but the 6-1, 185-pound senior has been in contact with the University of South Carolina throughout the fall. After cancelling a scheduled visit from South Carolina coaches, though, he now seems solid to Virginia Tech.

“He did listen to South Carolina and Clemson, but at the end of the day he will stick with his word and is going to Virginia Tech,” Daniel head coach Randy Robinson said. “He is solid with them. He cancelled the in-home visit with South Carolina.”

Williams, who can run the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds, could be one of the most underrated recruits in Tech’s 2009 class. An outstanding cornerback, he finished the 2008 season with 44 tackles with 11 pass break-ups and four interceptions. Williams is more than just a talented defender, however, as he is also a big-time performer on special teams

“I think his special teams skills could help to get him on the field fast,” Robinson said of Williams, who returned one punt and one kick-off return for touchdowns this year. Williams averaged 22.6 yards per kick return. “Once he gets the ball in his hands, with that 4.36 speed, he is pretty tough. If he gets a crease, he’ll hit it full speed. In [the Class AAA Upper State final], he went 86 yards untouched for a touchdown on a kick-off.
