Last Saturday night, hours after receiving an official scholarship offer from head coach Frank Beamer, Giles (Pearisburg, VA) place-kicker Cody Journell made no secret of his intentions…in all likelihood, he would commit to Virginia Tech and he would do so soon. The 6-0, 175-pound rising senior followed through, giving the staff his pledge last night.

Journell, who is the fourth high school senior to commit to Tech’s 2009 class, received an offer from Coach Beamer after turning in an impressive performance at Tech’s senior camp.

“On Saturday, I went over to Tech for camp and kicked at one o’clock in the afternoon,” Journell recalled. “Coach Beamer brought me in afterwards and said he wanted to give me a full scholarship. I called them on Sunday night to commit. I knew Coach Hite wouldn’t be in his office, but I didn’t want to leave them hanging. I called him and left a message saying I wanted to go ahead and commit and play ball.”

Virginia Tech is the program Journell has followed since his childhood, so there is no question that this opportunity is a special one.
