previously noted, the Virginia Tech softball team will be playing in the Women’s
College World Series. Their first game is Thursday, May 29 against #5 Texas
A&M. The game will be televised on ESPN at 3:00 in high definition.
The Women’s College World Series will feature eight teams, and it’s a double
elimination tournament, just like the regionals and Super Regionals. The Hokies
will have to be defeated twice to be eliminated.
What is not shown clearly in the bracket is that the losers of Games 1 and 2
will meet in Game 7. Other than that, the bracket is clear about how teams
advance, and what happens when they drop to the losers bracket.
taking on Texas A&M, Virginia Tech will face either #1 Florida or
Louisiana-Lafayette. The winner of the Tech/Texas A&M game will play the
winner of the Florida/Louisiana-Lafayette game on Friday, May 30 at 7pm on
ESPN2. The losers of each of the first round games will play in Game 7 of the
World Series, which will be held on May 31 at noon on ESPN. The loser of Game 7
will be eliminated from the World Series.
The earliest the Hokies can play a team from the other side of the bracket is
Game 9 on May 31 at 7pm. That would happen if the Hokies lose their first game
against Texas A&M (Game 2), and then win Game 7 to stay alive.
If Virginia Tech defeats the Aggies on Thursday, they’ll advance to Game 5.
Game 5 will take place at 7pm on May 30, and it will be televised by ESPN2. All
television broadcasts of the Women’s College World Series will be in HD.
It’s a complicated bracket, but if the Hokies win early, it will simplify
things quite a bit. We’ll return later in the week with a preview. In the
meantime, you can check out the link to the bracket above.
