The Virginia Tech softball team will be looking to defend their ACC Championship beginning this afternoon. The 2008 ACC Softball Tournament starts today, and the Hokies are the #2 seed.
Virginia Tech finished the regular season 41-15 overall, with a 16-5 record in ACC play. The only team ahead of them in the standings is UNC, who is 49-9-1 overall, with an 18-2 record in the conference. The Tar Heels took two out of three games against the Hokies in the regular season.
Tech, led by senior pitcher Angela Tincher, will take on Maryland in the first game. It will be played today at 12:30pm. The Hokies took two out of three games against the 7th-seeded Terps during the regular season. However, this year’s tournament is being held in College Park, so Maryland will have the home field advantage in the double elimination event.
If the Hokies knock off the Terps, they’ll take on the winner of the #3 Florida State/#6 Boston College matchup. That game would take place on Friday at 12:30pm. If Tech gets knocked off by Maryland, they’ll play the loser of the FSU-BC game tonight at 8pm.
Last year, Virginia Tech won the tournament behind the amazing pitching of Angela Tincher. The Hokies won all four of their games in the tournament, allowing a total of just one run. Tincher was named the Tournament MVP.
This year’s tournament should be tougher, with excellent competition at the top from North Carolina, as well as the #3 seed, Florida State. Beyond Florida State, no one else finished with a winning record in ACC play this year.
