GW’s Wilson One of the State’s Best

George Washington (Danville, VA) running back David Wilson saw playing time as a sophomore in 2006, but he wasn’t the featured running back because of the depth the Eagles already had in place. Wilson’s time to shine came in the 2007 season opener. With top junior fullback Tahron Goods out with an injury, the 5-11, 190-pound speedster needed to be a big-time playmaker at running back for head coach Dan Newell’s squad. He didn’t disappoint.

In the 24-21 season-opening win at Varina, Wilson had 17 carries for 139 yards. He returned a kick-off 75 yards for a score, giving GW-Danville a 14-7 lead over the Blue Devils going into halftime. Wilson would make big plays throughout the season, finishing with 136 carries for 1,551 yards (an average of 11.4 yards per carry) and 20 touchdowns (17 rushing, 2 on returns, 1 receiving).

“In our biggest games, David probably played his best,” Newell said. “At Varina, he probably ran for over 140 yards. He had a good game against Brooke Point in the first round of the playoffs. He had a good game against Potomac in the second round. He had over 200 yards against Parkland, which was a playoff team out of North Carolina. In each game, he had moments where he would make something special happen. He had a kick-off return against Varina to essentially win the game. Everyone is shocked at what he can do with his speed and power.

David Wilson emerged last year. Before that, you could tell something special was going to happen with him. It happened last year. David was able to carry the load while Tahron was hurt.”
